Cirques on Reunion Island: Salazie, Mafate, Cilaos
Discover the three preserved cirques of reunion island: Salazie, Mafate and Cilaos, each with its unique identity, offer timeless landscapes.
Salazie
Located in the heard of Reunion Island, the Cirque de Salazie is included in its entirety as a World heritage site by Unesco. The lush vegetation and the profusion of water favor food-producing cultivation as “chouchou”. The Voile de la Mariée is one the most beautiful waterfalls on the island and Hell-Bourg is classed as one of the most beautiful villages with its creole architecture and gardens.
Mafate
Accessible only on foot or by helicopter, Mafate offers an authentic experience far from modern life. Only a few hundred people live and cultivate on the small Ilets. There are many trails among the wild nature. Mountains, ravines, waterfalls and forests will fascinate the hikers.
Cilaos
Dominated by the Piton des Neiges, Cilaos is the driest and sunniest cirque of Reunion Island. Canyons, ravines and peaks shape an amazing landscape. The creole high mountain village is famous for its many outdoor activities, its gastronomy, its arts & crafts and its thermal springs.
