The Piton de la Fournaise peaks at 2,632 meters above sea level. The volcano of Reunion Island is one of the most active volcanoes in the world with an eruption every nine months on average. It is one of the most visited sites on the island. Hiking on the volcano The climb to Le Piton de La Fournaise reveals a breathtaking landscape. In order to reach the Pas de Bellecombe, a site with a panoramic view, visitors will cross La Plaine des Sables, an amazing lunar landscape. Different very accessible marked trails start from the volcano road. Visitors will hike on a ground covered with orangey-brown scoria in the most recent caldera, l’Enclos Fouqué. La Route des Laves, along the coast of the Wild South of the island, is an amazing landscape with successive lava flows from Piton de la Fournaise that have descended as far as the ocean. Lava tunnels can be visited with guides. The "Cité du volcan" Center of interpretation of the Piton de la Fournaise, La Cité du Volcan is a museographic space of 6000 m2. It offers interactive models, a 4D cinema, a multisensory lava tunnel that allow a total immersion in a fascinating volcanic world.
